Passport Information
-
You are required to have a U.S. Passport Book when traveling by air to any international location. Additionally, The Joy of Travel requires all passengers to have valid passport books if they are booked on any cruise that includes ports of call outside of the United States, even if the cruise lines themselves do not require that level of identification. We feel this is the safest way to travel internationally.
-
Processing times can vary depending on workload and occasional unforeseen circumstances. During busier times, such as the summer travel season, customers are encouraged to expedite their applications if traveling in less than 10 weeks.

If you were over age 16 when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 10 years.
If you were age 15 or younger when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 5 years.
The Issue Date of your passport can be found on the data page of your Passport Book or on the front of your Passport Card. If possible, you should renew your passport approximately nine (9) months before it expires. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met. If you passport has already expired, you may still be able to renew your passport by mail.

U.S. citizens don’t need a U.S. visa for travel, but when planning travel abroad they may need a visa issued by the embassy of the country they wish to visit. When planning travel abroad, learn about visa requirements by country by visiting the U.S. Department of State’s Country Specific Travel Information.

Air Travel
We want your air travel to be as stress free as possible. If it’s your first time flying or you need some advice about your flight, simply contact your booking agent at The Joy of Travel and they’ll be happy to answer all of your questions. You can also check out TSA’s website for current travel guidelines.
When in doubt, arrive early.
The last thing you want is to be running to catch your plane. Based on your airport and flight times, we can help you by making suggestions on necessary airport arrival times. And don’t underestimate the time you’ll need for connecting flights! With many large airports, you’ll need to consider the time it takes to navigate to your gate.
Track your flight.
While no one wants to experience cancellations or delays, with weather conditions and unpredictable mechanical issues, it’s always a good idea to stay-up-to-date. Along with airline apps, I can also recommend other apps and alerts to help you stay informed about your flight schedule.
Know the carry-on restrictions.
Save time when going through security by keeping in mind these important requirements for carry-ons:
Ensure all of your liquids or gels are in 3 ounce or smaller containers (more than 3oz permitted in checked baggage).
Place those containers in a 1 quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag.
Place 1 bag only per traveler in the security bin for screening.
Also, be sure to check the maximum carry-on luggage sizes–they vary based on the specific airline!
Layers, layers, layers.
Since you don’t know how warm or cold it will be on the plane, be sure to wear layers so you can effortlessly adjust to changing temperatures. A scarf can double as a blanket or even a pillow. Also, be sure to wear comfortable shoes that are easy to remove at security.

It's always smart to order the currency you will need for "pocket change" prior to your departure. After you arrive, you will usually be able to access local currency from an ATM. Don't forget to let your bank know you will be using your debit card while out of the country. Also alert your credit card company about any travel plans. Many countries in our backyard accept American currency, but will give you change in their local currency. Take small bills for shopping, tipping, any expense that you can't use a credit or debit card to cover.
-
Contact your carrier to determine the international plan they offer that best suits your needs. Watch out for hidden data access fees. Know how to turn the data off on your smart phone.
-
We recommend opening a travel account complete with a debit card. Fund that account with only enough money to use on your trip. This way if you debit card is stolen, the thief can't wipe out your entire checking or savings account.
-
We email a set of your travel documents to you. Please forward that email to your emergency contact people so they'll know where you are and how to reach you. This will also benefit you if you lose your documents. All you'll have to do is access your personal email account and there they are, readily accessible.
