Continent Collectors
Last week we talked about a specific type of cruiser, a Port Collector. Did you know there are people among us that collect Continents? I know several. In fact, I’m a member of that club.
Continent Collectors are people who want to have visited all seven continents. Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica.
Most of those continents are accessible in a variety of ways. You can go by land, by sea, by river, on a tour, independently, or in a combination of ways.
Personally, due to my never-ending fascination with Europe and repeated trips there, I am still missing three continents, and plan to have resolved that situation within the next four years. Watch our website to find out more and feel free to join me on some marvelous upcoming adventures.
In addition to Continent Collectors, there’s a new breed of cat out there that’s truly fascinating to me. Expedition travel.
Expedition ships in particular offer a very specific type of experience to very hard to reach, off the beaten path, destinations.
The Smithsonian Channel offers a great series called Mighty Cruise Ships. Hurtigruten has been featured several times (one of my friends works for them so I’m a little partial) and most recently their Roald Amundsen ship in the Antarctic seems to be playing daily. It’s on my “must do” list.
Roald Amundsen was the first man to reach the South Pole by crossing Antarctica. I can’t even imagine it. But his namesake ship allows you to experience the wonders of Antarctica in an amazing level of comfort complete with truly exceptional experiences and opportunities. Tune in to the show, you’ll be fascinating.
Another favorite of my is Ocean Victory. This expeditionary ship cruises Alaska during the summer months, and as expected, supplies a level of experiences and opportunities you will never find on a “brand” name consumer ship. She sails Antarctica during our winters, so if you love her, you can sail her on two grand adventures.
When it comes to Continent Collecting, it really is all about how you experience it. Particularly on ships, as each bring exciting, and very different, opportunities to the table.
