Top 5 Reasons to Visit Cancun

Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 3:00:00 pm

Allow me to re-introduce you to a destination that’s been attracting millions of American tourists for over forty years.  Cancun, Mexico.

What’s the big deal about Cancun, you ask?  There are several big deals about Cancun, as I was reminded during my wonderful trip there two weeks ago.

My Little Island Paradise Cozumel

My Little Island Paradise, Cozumel

Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 3:00:00 pm

Oh how I love my little island paradise, Cozumel.

I literally can’t remember my first trip to Cozumel, and frankly I can’t remember all of the trips in between that one and my trip there two weeks ago.  I’ve been there so many times I’ve lost count.  What does that tell you?

Jacques Cousteau loved Cozumel, and named it one of the top 5 dive sights in the world.  I have to say I agree-the water clarity and marine life there are among the best in the world.

See Caribou in Alaska Our Last True Wilderness

Alaska: Our Last True Wilderness

Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 3:00:00 pm

I want to see it all, don’t you?  I want to relax and fill my lungs with clean, crisp air while sitting on my balcony observing miles and miles of pristine forests floating silently by.

I want to see whales in their natural habitat, not in some man made contraption.  I want to hear the sound of a glacier calving and smell the smoke from a fire burning in a secluded oceanfront cabin.

I want to “know” the inside passage.

In With the New

Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 12:00:00 am

August is one of the best months in travel for travel agents.  August is when we open our front doors to discover boxes of new brochures full of exciting itineraries and enticing ideas for the upcoming year.

August 25, 2016 is the 100 year anniversary of our National Park system.  Most of the travel suppliers we use have created fantastic opportunities for us to celebrate this outstanding national achievement.

The Dominican Republic can be Delightful

Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 8:00:00 am

You know how your kids never think you are cool or interesting?  Well my daughter told me my articles the past two weeks have been like a PowerPoint history lesson (it wasn’t a compliment), so I’m going for something different in this one.

As you may know most of my agents went along with me to the Dominican Republic the last week of July to tour resorts there.  We stayed eight days and saw everything we wanted to see and more.

Understanding travel pricing

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 10:00:00 am

Have you ever sat on a plane next to someone who paid considerably less (or more) than you did for your ticket?

What about a trip?  Have you scored a fabulous deal while your friends had to max out their credit cards because they decided to wait a few weeks before committing to go with you?

Travel pricing is a convoluted mess, but I’m feeling brave today and am going to try to explain it.

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic

USA occupies the Dominican Republic

Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 5:00:00 pm

Earlier I told you a few fascinating tidbits I learned about Christopher Columbus and the Dominican Republic.  Our historian Miguel divulged a few other interesting facts during our tour that completely astounded me.  For instance, that the U.S. Military had occupied his country not once, but twice, during the 1900’s.

It all began back in 1911 when a group of rebels attacked President Caceres of the Dominican Republic and killed him.

Christopher Columbus is buried in two places?

Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 8:00:00 am

One thing I know for sure, when I’m dead and gone no one is going to be fighting over my remains.  Certainly not entire countries.

I just returned from an 8 day trip to the Dominican Republic, the purpose of which was to tour a dozen new and/or refurbished resorts.  Who knew the best part of the trip would be a history lesson about Christopher Columbus.  Yes, that Christopher Columbus, the one who sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and discovered America.  Except he didn’t.

Eco-Adventure close to home

Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 6:00:00 am

I just returned from my first trip to Costa Rica and I have to say it was one of the most unique destinations I’ve ever experienced.

The locals were proud to tell me that both Happy Planet and Forbes named Costa Rica the happiest country in the world, and I have to say there are plenty of things to be happy about down there.

The words of the Father

Friday, May 6, 2016 at 11:30:00 am

There was a young man who was very successful.  In fact, everything he touched seemed to turn to gold.

He owned a fabulous resort in Mexico, he had a successful marriage and beautiful children.  By all accounts he was the definition of success.

As his father lay dying, the young man expected to hear words of praise and pride from his father for his accomplishments.  Instead, his father said to him “I am ashamed of you.”

Good, Better, Best

Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 7:00:00 pm

Right from the beginning the all-inclusive resort model was a good one.  Customers flocked to them, loving the idea that they had paid in advance for their full vacation experience and were not going to have any surprise charges.

As time has gone by there has been quite a bit of differentiation in all-inclusive resorts.  I thought a little clarification about the different levels might help you understand what you’re buying. I want to be sure you know exactly what you’re getting, not what they lead you to believe you are getting.

Make Coach feel like First Class

Friday, February 5, 2016 at 7:15:00 am

Since I find myself flying more times every year than I can count and I’m too cheap to pay for an upgrade, let me give you some pointers that will make coach feel more like first class.

Nothing makes coach feel more like coach than the cramped leg room.  First let’s invest in a carry-on bag that fits easily under the seat in front of you, allowing you to capitalize on every inch of leg room available to you.

Viva la Mexico

Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 3:00:00 pm

The Joy of Travel Team is on the road much of the year, traveling tens of thousands of miles so we can bring to our customers an insider’s perspective and base our recommendations on personal experience.

Our number one choice for 2016:  Viva la Mexico!  Mexico was our number one selling destination for 2015; it outsold second place Jamaica 7 to 1.  I travelled there six wonderful times, took my kids and grandkids, and celebrated my birthday there as well.   My entire travel agent team and our spouses were there in December touring new resorts just to kick off 2016 with a blast.

Pearl Seas offers something truly different

Friday, December 25, 2015 at 8:00:00 am

Three areas close to home remain on my updated list, Nova Scotia, the “Southern Charm” areas of our lower southeastern states, and the Great Lakes.

I was recently introduced to a brand new company that offers something for me in each of these areas and offers it in a way I like to travel, the all-inclusive cruise.

What's the best way to experience Hawaii?

Sunday, December 20, 2015 at 8:00:00 am

What’s the best way to experience Hawaii?

First and foremost, do not go to Hawaii unless you can at least 7 nights.  The flight is over 7 hours one way, nonstop flight from DFW.  There’s just no point in flying that distance to stay less than a week.

Next you need to ask yourself this question:  If I love it, can I expect to return to Hawaii again?

Have I introduced you to Alaska?

Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 7:00:00 am

Should Alaska be on your Bucket List?
You opt for the Seaplane Shore Excursion. You board the plane, take off, soar over jagged mountains, then land in the middle of a remote, pristine lake. The pilot shuts down the engines. He suggests you listen…listen very carefully. It’s what you don’t hear that’s important: No people. No sirens. No lawn mowers. No traffic. Just the pure, unspoiled sounds of nature. That’s Alaska.

Fly like Superman

Friday, December 18, 2015 at 7:00:00 pm

Let me tell you about the craziest thing I’ve ever done.  It’s called the Superman Zip Line.  It’s over a mile long, reaching speeds up to 70 MPH.  You lay in a sling and they shoot you down the side of a mountain, across a canyon and up to the landing point.  It is a pure BLAST lasting over one minute and as much like flying as anything I’ll ever do.

questions about cruises

With the words “all-inclusive” playing in your head, you step on board your ship and leave all your trivial worries like money or budgets, behind. Everything is included, and it’s all paid in full, right?

This is the moment when the cruise lines have you where they want you.
